Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about registration, prizes, event logistics, and what to expect throughout the weekend. If you don’t see your question listed, feel free to contact us — we’re happy to help.

Is this a race?

No. The Poker Run is not a speed event. It’s a relaxed, organized boating experience with designated stops around the lake. Safety and fun come first.

What types of boats can participate?

Boats of all kinds are welcome, including cruisers, pontoons, runabouts, and houseboats. Speed is not a factor. Captains must operate within their vessel’s legal capacity.

How does the poker portion work?

Registered players travel to designated card stops around the lake to collect one playing card at each stop. At the end of the run, players submit their best five-card hand for prize consideration.

How many boats can register?

The event is limited to 50 boats to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. Early registration is encouraged.

How many people can be on a boat?

Captains may bring as many registered players and guests as their vessel’s legal capacity allows.

What is the difference between a player and a guest?

Players participate in the card game and are eligible for prizes. Guests may attend all social events and festivities but do not participate in the game portion.

What if we can’t make it to every card stop?

If a boat is unable to complete every stop within the designated timeframe, accommodations are made so participants can still complete their hand.

What do proceeds support?

Proceeds benefit local charities and lake-area organizations that serve the Smith Mountain Lake community.

Are prizes awarded?
Yes. Cash prizes and awards are given for several categories during the Smith Mountain Lake Poker Run. The first player to get five aces receives $2,000, a top prize that the SMLBA has awarded numerous times. Additional prizes include $1,000 for best hand, $500 for second best, and $200 for third best, along with other fun awards such as best appearing crew and the boat with the most registered players.
What does registration include?

Registration includes participation in the Poker Run and access to the weekend’s scheduled events, including social gatherings, food, and entertainment. (You’ll want to customize this depending on what’s included each year.)

Are there refunds?

No. Registrations for the Smith Mountain Lake Poker Run are non-refundable. As this is a charitable event with advance planning and commitments, all entries are final.

Is the event canceled or refunded due to inclement weather?

No. The Smith Mountain Lake Poker Run is a rain-or-shine event, and refunds are not issued due to weather conditions. Participants should plan accordingly and prioritize safe boating based on current conditions.
